Update Oct. 9, 2016 - General Meeting and Election
We have some word that the Forestry will end the fire season on Nov 1st and restart it again April 1st but can't confirm it yet. More specifics to come.
UPDATE OCTOBER 11, 2016 - NONE
UPDATE OCTOBER 6, 2016
Called Forestry, left a mesage.
UPDATE SEPT. 30, 2016
Called Forestry. Left a message.
UPDATE SEPT. 21, 2016
AF&G general meeting occurred. The Board moved to stop toilet service and trash pick up until the range is allowed to reopen to save money. Nothing new otherwise.
UPDATE SEPT. 20, 2016
Nothing new with Forestry. It is noted that the AF&G Board has received a number of inquiries from members and non-members concerning what more we can do to get the range open. Some are criticisms but mostly just words of disappointment in not being able to shoot. The board will most likely discuss the matter further at the General Meeting Sept 21, 2016. If anything new developes it will be posted. Stay tuned!
UPDATE SEPT. 15, 2016
Spoke with Mr. Marc Stamer, District Ranger for U.S. Forestry today. Marc was informative and positive with us. He stated that the evaluation as to opening the range or other ranges impinges upon the fuel conditions and the resources they have. He also said that we might be able to meet in a few weeks and walk our facility together and discuss matters. All of AF&G's positions were made known, including the possibility of shotgun shooting only because of the more remote chance of sparks since shotgun is lead and not directed toward spark emiting targets. Mr. Stamer acknowledged our concerns about shooters in the open forest and telephone numbers were exchanged for the purpose of keeping our membership informed.
UPDATE SEPT. 10, 2016
Correction: MAC as referred to in September 9, 2016 update is not the Mountain Advisory Committee. It is the Municipal Advisory Council.
UPDATE SEPT. 9, 2016
On September 8, 2016 at the MAC (Mountain Advisory Committee) meeting at the resort in Lake Arrowhead the Forestry, Cal Fire, and other departments took a Q&A from local residents concerning the fires and the closure of the forest from shooting. Clarke Hahne, a very well known, knowledgable, and respected realtor of Remax Real Estate in Lake Arrowhead and friend of AFG, knowing of the concerns and position of AFG toward the closure, asked Forestry why the range should not be opened since it would reduce shooters in the open forest (The AFG position). The representative of Forestry stated that it was their thinking that if people heard others shooting at the range, they would think that it was ok to shoot in the forest. But, that they would consider the argument. Of course open shooting in the forest has been prohibited for years and years. But that's how government thinks. So, folks, you know what that means. At least we know that the local community cares and supports our position. Stay Tuned!
UPDATE SEPT. 8, 2016
Forestry has not responded our inquiry of August 31, 2016. Another request for a response was sent to today. Otherwise, No Changes.
UPDATE SEPT. 5, 2016
The range is closed to shooting during the fire season as of September 2 by order of the U.S. Forestry.
The lock on the gate is changed. No shooting is allowed. Management will be monitoring the facility.
The Board has put 2017 Membership renewals on hold status. When renewals open again it will be publicized.
All events are cancelled with the exception of the Club Dinner 2016 and Club meetings.
The range will open again when Forestry allows it. Expect the closure to last all fire season, which is what Forestry deems it to be. It appears hiking is still open. Offroading and hunting are still open as well but only to spark arrrested vehicles and licensed hunters respectively.
Club management has tried to contact Forestry but has received no response. We expect that we will be contacted however.
Please be patient! Calls and emails expressing anger are not helpful.
UPDATE AUG 31, 2016
AF&G BOARD OF DIRECTORS MET (Special Meeting) ON AUG. 31, 2016 TO DETERMINE PATH FORWARD FOR THE CLUB IN LIGHT OF THE U.S. FOREST SERVICE'S DECISION TO PROHIBIT SHOOTING FOR THE FIRE SEASON.
——————— Special Meeting Summary————————
President Frank Van Diest called for and opened the meeting. A quorum was present.
The Issues pertinent to members and the range’s temporary closure discussed were;
Whether or not the range should be locked to protect our members from unknowingly entering and shooting, and possibly having to suffer the criminal penalties as imposed by Forestry? (the Board voted unanimously, YES). The Motion was modified to include the acquisition of a large banner/sign to put on the front gate. A new lock will be affixed to the gate on September 2, 2016. No entry is permitted until Forestry lifts the prohibition.
Permission to act further to publicize the range’s temporary (until further notice) closure to the membership? (the Board voted unanimously, YES). Motion included the necessity to keep the membership informed as well as possible with email and website posting/publication of current information as to the status of the range.
Whether or not 2017 membership renewals availability should be postponed since shooting is prohibited until Forestry allows it? (Motion Tabled and question put on Hold to see what transpires with the Forestry).
Whether or not to cancel all shooting events on calendar? (the Board voted unanimously, YES to the Motion to cancel all events until further notice excluding the Club Dinner and Meetings required by our bylaws. The website shall reflect the decision.)
Note: The Board agreed (without motion) that the President and those assisting him, would to try to establish open communications with Forestry management in order to provide current information to the membership.
President Frank Van Diest reminded those in attendance that the Forestry has closed the Forest down entirely in the past and that they have always opened it back up.
